Zoya is a journalist who lives on Sakhalin Island. She belongs to the Nivkh, an indigenous minority group. As a child, she was bullied by her classmates because of her ethnicity, so she left her hometown at the first opportunity. But now she is forced to return to her native village of Nogliki. While spending winter evenings with her mother, Zoya records the stories and legends of her people. Writing helps her accept herself as she is.
