ROSKINO, with the support of Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, will hold Russian Film Days in Kazakhstan from March 3rd to 5th under the Russian Film Festival (RFF) brand. Screenings of five Russian films including dramedy, comedy, and animation will be held in Astana. For the first time, the RFF program includes a co-production with a CIS country, as part of ROSKINO’s strategy to promote joint film production with CIS countries and promote such projects among a wider audience.
Russian Film Days, under the RFF brand, are being held in Kazakhstan for the third year in a row. In 2022, Kazakh cinema fans could get to know the works of Russian directors, first on the IVI online cinema platform, then at the offline festival in Almaty where three Russian films were shown. Russian Film Days in Kazakhstan was one of the most successful RFF events in 2022.
This year, RFF will present a richer program of five films of different genres. Russian Film Days in Kazakhstan are being held in cooperation with the international cultural project "Russian Seasons".
A special project in the Russian Film Days program is a Russia-Kazakhstan film co-produced—the full-length debut of director and Almaty-native Yana Skopina, the comedy drama Summer Ends Soon. The film is the first co-production with a CIS country in the RFF program. The main role in the film is played by the aspiring Kazakhstani actor Alikhan Abildin, who received the Best Actor award for this work at the Eurasia International Film Festival. The film tells the story of the summer of 1990 in a Kazakh multinational courtyard. Russian rock—the music of change—is heard from the windows. A Kazakh boy, Baha, falls in love and in order to please the young beauty resorts to various methods, from gifts to hypnosis.
Summer Ends Soon was presented in the co-production section of the Russian content market Key Buyers Event 2020, organized by ROSKINO. The director and producer Fyodor Bondarchuk was the film’s artistic director.
Russian Film Days also includes the adventure comedy Young Man about the conflict between generations, by Alexander Fomin with Pavel Tabakov and Danila Kozlovsky in the lead roles; the folk comedy Family Budget by Evgeny Abyzov, an ironic and witty guide to managing family finances. For young viewers, two full-length animated films will be presented: the exciting children's detective Finnick, which was in the top three highest grossing Russian films of 2022, and Teddy Boom!—the story of a thief who steals a unique ruby and hides it inside a teddy bear called Boom in order to smuggle the gem out of the country.
